Two ways to tell future-you what matters
FollowUpThen turns an email address into a reminder instruction. OpenRang puts the scheduling control on the Gmail conversation. Neither interface is inherently better. The useful one is the one you remember at the moment you decide to defer something.
FollowUpThen’s site describes an email-based service, a free plan with 50 active reminders per month, and optional additional capabilities. Read “active reminders” as its plan unit, rather than assuming every product counts reminders the same way.
The consequential differences
| Need | OpenRang | FollowUpThen |
|---|---|---|
| Create a reminder | Choose Rang and a time inside Gmail. | Use a date-based email address. |
| Use across email clients | Current scheduler belongs to the installed Chrome profile. | Vendor describes an email-based workflow across devices. |
| Add context | Optional private note in your own reminder. | Review the service’s email-address and reminder options. |
| Mailbox access | Requires Google authorization to manage the selected Gmail inbox. | Basic email reminders are described as needing no inbox connection; response detection has separate setup. |
Choose by where you work
- Desktop Gmail: OpenRang lets you open a conversation, choose a fixed revisit time, and add the sentence that makes the reminder useful later.
- Several email clients or mobile devices: FollowUpThen’s email-address workflow may be a better fit.
- Reminders while your laptop is off: choose a service that meets that requirement. OpenRang’s scheduler requires Chrome to be running and online.
A reminder and response detection solve different jobs
A fixed-time reminder asks you to review a conversation later. Response detection also decides whether a reply should change the reminder. FollowUpThen documents response detection separately, including connection requirements and edge cases.
The OpenRang workflow recommended here is a fixed-time Rang: add a note such as “Review this conversation on Friday,” then check the latest messages before acting. This comparison does not recommend OpenRang for automatically cancelling a reminder after a reply. For the manual workflow, use the Gmail follow-up guide.
