Three controls, three effects
| Control | What changes | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Hide Inbox | The inbox message list is concealed in the interface. | You want to compose or search without scanning new requests. |
| Filter-based Pause Inbox | Matching incoming messages skip the inbox and are held under a label or similar workflow. | You want incoming mail kept out of the inbox across the relevant clients. |
| Snooze a conversation | A chosen conversation leaves the inbox and is revisited later. | One piece of work is relevant at a future time. |
Pause does not mean the email server rejects delivery. In the filter-based model, messages still reach the mailbox. The difference is where they appear.
How a filter-based inbox pause works
Boomerang’s recovery instructions describe removing a pause filter, moving held messages to the inbox, and removing the holding label. A persistent filter can outlive the browser session that created it. Before choosing a pause tool, check:
- Recovery: can you remove the filter and restore held mail yourself?
- Exceptions: which messages can still reach the inbox?
- Availability: what happens to held mail if you revoke access or close the browser?
Where OpenRang fits today
Choose OpenRang’s Hide Inbox control to keep the message list out of sight while you find an attachment or write an email. New messages still arrive. It is manual view hiding, rather than filter-based mail holding or a scheduled lockout.
For a selected conversation you want back later, use a Rang. Rang scheduling requires Chrome running online.
Choose by what you want to prevent
- Seeing the inbox: use a hiding control.
- Checking at unplanned times: compare focus restrictions such as those Inbox When Ready describes.
- New messages appearing in the inbox: evaluate filter-based pause products and their recovery behavior.
- Notification interruptions: inspect Gmail, browser, and device notification settings separately.
The right Boomerang Inbox Pause alternative depends on which of these outcomes you need.
